James “Kelly Fox!” Davis is a native of Washington, DC, and is a member and Director of Music of the Kettering Baptist Church in Upper Marlboro, MD, under the leadership of the great Senior Pastor, Bucas Sterling, III.
James attended the Ellington School of the Arts, and studied classical and jazz instrumental music. He grew up in church, and accepted Jesus at an early age, at the Antioch Baptist Church, in Washington, DC.
James began tapping out familiar melodies on his family’s upright piano at a very early age. His parents immediately recognized his gift and knew what direction to guide him. After studying privately 6 years, he auditioned and was accepted to the Ellington School of the Arts where he studied classical piano for one year. It was here where James first picked up and fell in love with the saxophone. He dropped piano and changed his major to saxophone after one year of playing, and focused on jazz studies.
Upon graduating Ellington, James continued his music studies at the University of the District of Columbia as a Music Education major. It was there that he began to be exposed to gospel music and playing in a new light. He began hanging out in the practice modules and learning from other talented gospel musicians, i.e., William Becton, Gerry Gillespie, and Kenneth Gross. It was then that he was inspired to learn more about and how to play gospel music.
James began playing for his first church choir at the age of 18. It was then that he wrote his first gospel song “Jesus Paid It All” along with his then Pastor, David K. North.
Since then, James has assisted many churches in the Washington, DC area with the development of their music ministries.
James has become an accomplished songwriter, producer and recording engineer. He established his group “A Bunch of Friends” in 2010 to assist with his debut recording, “The Best Gift”, which was released November 09 2010.
